Yesteryear's prices
At first thought it seemed like such a bargain to see that a brand new Marlin 39A only listed for 65.95 in 1956 but then what did a average person make in a week back then? This is the ad from American Rifleman magazine May 1956!

Re: Yesteryear's prices
I have one of those.
Mine's pre-microgroove though, so Grandpa probably paid even less than that!
It's an awesome rifle.

Re: Yesteryear's prices
That's about 85 bucks a week. Today they still sell for about a weeks wages.

And you could buy a Mosin for about two days work. Today, you can recycle beer cans
(I realize this isn't your everyday Mosin, but still pretty cheap!)

Re: Yesteryear's prices
That was still a lot of cash in 1960 I would have only bought five

1960 was 3 years before my time. I do fondly remember going to Coast to Coast, or ANY hardware store back in the later '60's and early '70's, and buying a brick of Federal or Winchester .22lr. for $5 even. Head to the river to hunt whatever was around, shoot til we got tired of it, and barely made a dent in our ammo. supply. Those were the good old days.

Re: Yesteryear's prices
The $5 from the 60's is pretty close to the $19-$25 a brick of today, you can still shoot .22 for the same money

Re: Yesteryear's prices
Did you look at the rifle in that ad? I've never heard of that Finn. Look at the stock. There is a cutout under the bolt knob like a mauser! What is it? A modified m27?

Re: Yesteryear's prices
Looks like an M27. I think I see the "popsicle sticks" but that stock looks like a Mauser stock Maybe a Czech. Reasons because it looks like a strap hole on the buttstock and the carved out area for the turned down bolt. I like the "insist on matched" Like you can do that with a Finn. I have never heard of that model number. Google here I come.bunkysdad wrote:Did you look at the rifle in that ad? I've never heard of that Finn. Look at the stock. Re: Yesteryear's prices
I think the RV model had the cut out and the bent bolt. Saw a picture somewhere. The cavalry carbine model i think.

Re: Yesteryear's prices
Oh heck I didn't even notice the turned down bolt. I wonder if it wasn't some Finnish match rifle.
Re: Yesteryear's prices
I want the one below it. 1960 Olympic Biathalon Masterpiece. Sounds expensive though! Probably $18.95

Re: Yesteryear's prices
I'm telling ya that rifle hasn't been on this forum before I'm pretty sure.
Re: Yesteryear's prices
I was joking (kind of) about JYD having it but i have seen a picture somewhere in my internet travels. There is one model that does have those features, at least that is what it said. IT was a long time ago but i will look for it maybe i can find it. Remember the ones with the peep sight on the back of the bolt that was professionally bubba'd in the 20's? can't remember the name but i think it has some of those features too. Maybe it is related to that one.
