unfinished bayonet
Unfinished or training bayonet maybe, same size as any Mosin, looks like a Mosin bayonet, no markings, not cut to fit around the sight, no catch. Picked it up at a flea market today. Investigations are ongoing.

Re: unfinished bayonet
I will have to check that once I get home, looks like it will.

That's really strange and cool. Great find. And probably cheap too.

Re: unfinished bayonet
I bought it with several items so it didn't cost much. The seller had no idea what it is or were it was from. Odd that there are no markings at all, it's not as unfinished as I would expect a bare casting to be, there are also at least two layers of paint on it, but that could have been done later.

Re: unfinished bayonet
I've seen a couple of these. Not sure if it's true but I was told they were left-over unfinished blanks from the NEW and Remington m91 contracts.

Re: unfinished bayonet
That's what I was suspecting, surprising that someone saved it, likely Bannerman sold it for decoration. That would explain the layers of paint.

Very neat! Must have been flea market weekend as I picked up a Remington Mosin with a Panshin bayonet on it at a flea market this weekend. Bill

Re: unfinished bayonet
That is a real cool find Jim. One of a kind find. The chances of getting another like it are slim to slimmer, and just thinking about the possibilities of where it's been, and why it didn't get completed is fascinating.
Re: unfinished bayonet
Very interesting! Man, I miss the east coast flea markets. We don't have anything like that up here.

KH Wrobel describes exactly this type of "bayonet" on p. 296 of vol. I of his books. According to him such bayonets were used by soldiers acting as marshals during military reviews, where these bayonets often carried small flags attached to them.

Re: unfinished bayonet
Thank you for the heads up on that, unfortunately KH's books haven't been translated to English yet, and as I don't read German I couldn't see spending the high cost for the books. KH was often helpful when he was on the old board ten years ago.
