New To Me M56

Post by ffuries »

Receiver, trigger guard and magazine SN's match 60932, bolt is SN F4460, and the rear housing is SN E2634. The entire stock is wood to include the hand guard. The butt stock has J.B. carved onto it, FZ and EM are carved in the fore stock, beneath the hand guard area. What appears to be Isia. Muh. and P. Konce or Komce is carved into the side of the stock above the trigger assembly. The rear sight has the Russian/Cyrillic n stamped on it. Now there are no arsenal stamps anywhere that I can find. Haven't disassembled it yet to see what is under the wood, that said there are no markings on the left side of the receiver like I have seen on other SKS's. So I don't know where, when it was made and where it has been, but I love the been there look and the stock graffiti. I know nothing about these rifles, have collected bolt actions up to this point. Only reason I called it a M56 is that the import mark has it as a M56.

Sorry for the pictures had to take them inside. If there are areas that I need to look at or take pictures of to make it better/easier to identify please let me know.

I can't help with the ID but I have a suggestion for you. Get that damn greasy rifle off that table before your wife sees it. :x :x

There were about 5 SKS's for sale at a (LGS) local gun store, 4 of them looked brand new and then there was this one. My wife made a remark to the guy as I looking at them that this one had history on it, and if she was to choose one it would be this one. She thinks along the same lines as me when it comes to the military surplus rifles. Also looked at GEW 88 "S" marked that was there, it was an 1890 Erfurt with no Turkish markings or characteristics at all. There was no Regimental markings on it, and the front sight base was missing the right side of the base where there was a ding in the barrel shroud. Both the rear and front sling swivels were on the rifle. Since I already had a GEW 88, we adopted the SKS instead.

Left it sitting outside for a little bit this morning in the Florida Sun to liquefy the copious amounts of grease this thing was bathed in. OMG told my wife my hands shouldn't rust or be rough for at least a year. Out of 23 surplus guns this thing was the greasiest by far.

Neither can I help,

I do wish people would quit posting pictures of SKS rifles though. I haven't owned one in over 15 years and I have gotten a strong itch for one again.
