Re: Mosin 91/30 hex receiver

Your Mosin is one of the roughly 13,000 M91/30's assembled by Finland using new production barrels made by Tikka and a combination of new parts and reused parts from unserviceable Mosin's. These are often called the M30 in Finnish service. The barrels themselves were made in 1943 and 1944 but many w...

Re: Fox arms N.E.W

Fox Arms was a subcontractor for N.E.W. but they only made parts. Specifically they made 400,000 barrels and the same number of magazine assemblies, so the answer to your question is zero rifles. There is a receiver stamp that has been identified as a Fox Arms stamp, but this is disputed. In his def...

Re: M38 Sestroretsk

Thank you. Do you know convert them? What country? I heard about 91/59 but not 91/38. Czechoslovakia was long considered the source for these carbines but no real documentation has surfaced. Within the last few years Bulgaria has also become suspected as a source for them as most of the stocks have...

Re: considering first Finnish M39 purchase

I have a question how do I know the barrel manufacturer of my M39? The barrel manufacturer is stamped on top of the barrel shank behind the rear sight. Can't see that area in the pictures but the serial number you provided falls into a block of M39's made in 1941 by Sako. This block also includes a...

Re: Finnish m91 stock markings

this is just some info i found on a forum New England Westinghouse M91's had neither dates on the tang or the Imperial crest stamped on the top of the receiver so that's a possible origin of your receiver. Look on the underside of the receiver for a stamped letter such as a E or a M with a arrow po...

Re: Strange 91/30, what is the deal?

Any possibility it could be something like a Leningrad seige rifle built from parts ? The rifle was assembled at Izhevsk because it has the 1941-42 Izhevsk factory military representative final acceptance marking on the barrel.(see picture) Izhevsk final proof mark (2).jpg I already posted this to ...

Re: M28 missing some markings

It's possible your receiver is from a New England Westinghouse made M91, they didn't mark the imperial crest on the receiver. Look at the underside of the receiver tang, if it isn't dated it's likely a N.E.W. receiver since they didn't date them either. Look for small stamps on the receiver that loo...

Re: 1944 91/30

First let's dispel with the sniper discussion about this rifle. It is not a sniper or an ex sniper unless you can show pictures of the left side of the receiver and barrel shank. What information are you looking for as it relates to a 1944 Izhevsk? To tell you the truth, other then production numbe...

Re: 1944 91/30

Not common but it did happen. Production of PU scopes and mounts lagged behind rifle production at times. If a sniper grade rifle was completed and no scope or mount was available it was completed as a standard infantry rifle and sent out the door. It didn't happen very often though and 1944 is a lo...

Re: m91 stock restoration

I have a 1926 tikka m91 that has a clear coat on the stock, it looks like it might have been a sprayed on clear lacquer as there are some runs. I was thinking of trying to remove the clear with some lacquer thinner and then treating it with linseed oil/pine tar to look more like the original stock....

As said above, the SA stamp was used on the barrel not the bolt. You can sometimes find M39's with Sako marked cocking knobs but usually M39's have bolts made from recycled Russian parts.

Re: 00 stamp on dragoon

That's a early version of the black powder pressure proof stamp used starting in about 1922. It was replaced with the double O pressure proof stamp that has one O inside another in the early 1930's but they mean the same thing.

Re: New Members, Make your first post here!

I am a new owner of a beautiful 1917 Tula M91, however, after some research I have noticed something very odd in comparison to other mosins, the cleaning rod is not at all like any mosin rods I can find images of. Does anybody here know what exactly this is? Is it even originally from a mosin? The ...

Re: 1944 Finnish M39 Markings ?

The Finn's built M39's out of parts from older Mosin's so the numbers, when they have them, usually don't match. The only part they consistently matched to the rifle was bolt, that is considered Finn matching. That looks like a nice example of a 44 Sako.

Re: Help with 91/30 possibly finnish capture?

You actually have a German captured Mosin that was later sold to Finland. The blued bolt and polished rear sight are signs of WW2 German rework. The double 8 sided star stamp visible on the stock is also a depot rework stamp found on German reworked rifles from several different countries. What you ...

Re: Thoughts on switching M39 stocks

On a side note, would shooting a 91/30 with a bayonet attached potentially help with its accuracy? I know some have said they were meant to be fired with bayonets attached but I've also heard it was only for the side folding one, I think M44. I thought about corking and playing with it but thought ...

The MO is a post war refurbishment stamp used by the Moscow Military District Artillery armament base №38 in Pavlovska Sloboda. The 50 stands for 1950, the year the refurbishment was performed.

It's certainly possible it has a magazine assembly from a parted out captured Finnish Mosin, other post war Soviet refurbs have been found with Finnish marked parts. What specifically leads you to think it's a Finn Mag assembly? Does it have the HV mark or just that style of modification?

Those sling hangers are a common Finnish modification. They allow the rifle to use the standard Finnish 1 inch wide leather or canvas slings commonly found on the M39 and other Finnish Mosin models.
