$89 Fleet Farm buy - 1943 Izhevsk

Post by audadvnc »

The nice man at the Fleet Farm gun counter just sold me a 1943 dated 91/30 for $89 plus tax! Cheaper than gold, that's for sure. I looked at a couple of them, they both looked good, so I went for one that was likely manufactured around the time of the Third Battle of Karkhov.

I have to say, those wartime rifles are rough and ready in their build quality. The stock looks like it was whittled with a butter knife in somebody's cottage. The receiver finish is equivalent to a rat tail file. But the bore looks strong - and it has that delicious aroma of Cosmoline permeating the room now.

It's not pretty, but it clearly shows its history. I'm going to leave it slathered in grease and put it up on a high shelf - hopefully never to be pulled down for cleaning & re-use. Leave that for somebody else...

Not all 1943 Izhevsk 91/30's will have that rough look, I have both beaver chewed ones and some that look like they were made in 1946. I suspect that when the heat wasn't on they reverted to normal procedure and properly finished the rifles. Nice deal, it's getting much harder to find them for that money.

Great purchase at that price! Inflation has not caught up in your neck of the woods. Best clean out that cosmoline in case you need to use it in a seconds notice, besides the smell of it is what I believe causes MOSINITIS .

Congrats on the purchase. It is about time the wartime rifles get the respect they deserve.

I like premium black tea, straight, and unusually strong.

Unlike coffee my Doc doesn't seem to consider tea a vice, I never cared much for coffee anyway.
