I picked up a rifle from a junk table. I am super rusty on my ID skills, but i think it appears to be an m91 SCW. Sadly, it's sitting in a stock that's been sporterized-- cut in front of the front escutcheon, rounded off, sanded heavily, reshellaced, front barrel band missing, rear barrel band missing screw, no handguard, wire slings gone.
I bought it with the intention of restoring it and even started hunting for a full length m91 stock to drop it into, but since it may be a SCW m91, i feel like that part of it's history is lost and now I should just leave it in it's sad sporter stock. What do you guys think?
What to do with this rifle (possibly m91 SCW)?

It's an SCW. I don't know what to tell you. Replacement parts are pretty expensive. You could try to find good deals on parts and restore it once you have everything. I'd guess you'd likely spend $300+ on a stock, hand guard, and barrel bands. Might find some deals at local auctions or estate sales.

Finding an scw stock is gonna be almost impossible. I do have a lead on an m91 Stock. I might get it and fashion some repro wire hangers. I want to say I saw a front barrel band in stock somewhere. I'm just restoring this for my collection anyhow.willyj73 wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 8:32 pm It's an SCW. I don't know what to tell you. Replacement parts are pretty expensive. I have an M27 I bought off a co-worker years ago that the stock had been cut down and sporterized. Thankfully the rest of the rifle hadn't been messed with. I'd say it took me a good 4 or 5 years to find the stock and hardware for it. A few years ago I ended up finding another M27 stock set with hardware for a good price and bought it as a spare just in case I stumble across another sportered M27 in the future.
Even just putting it in a M91 stock would be better than it sitting in a sportered stock IMHO. Unfortunately the economics of finding surplus stocks and hardware has fell by the wayside as parts have dried up. Good luck with it!

Leave it be until you stumble across a stock that it would look good in. Might take years, even decades.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
