oxidation / verdigris

Post by railroadweasel »

I found some 70 year old stuff gone bad in an ammo can, about 300 rounds of 147 grain FMC, lead filled. I was able to save the bullets at least with a 5 min CLR soak. Their website does NOT recommend it with brass or copper. I've never used it before but based on a recommendation...picture shows the results.

Evaporust would probably also work. I have used it to soak brass parts, it will tone the metal, but remove the crud. Looks like the bullets came out all right.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Thanks for that tip. I had never heard of it, and I see it is a little easier to use, not as caustic. I have a bunch of hand tools the kids left outside I'm going to try it on.
