A couple WWI Austrian captured M91's (1896 Tula and 1915 Izhevsk)

Post by lthilsdorf »

I was updating photos on some of my collection and decided to get some of my two favorite Mosin Nagants. Both appear to be World War I era original rifles, in "as is" condition as when they were being used in the Austrian Army during World War I.

The 1896 Tula was picked up in a shop local to me by a different forum member back in 2009 for around $200. At the time I saw it in the shop it had the Austrian made straight slot bayonet and scabbard with it. I didn't know what it was at the time (had been collecting for only a few months) but another forum member bought it. He later sold it to me, though not at the same price he picked it up for, haha! Still has the original flat leaf sight (slightly bent due to damage), a stock without sling slots, a wooden cross bolt, and Austrian sling swivels on the stock and unit markings on the butt plate.

The 1915 Izhevsk came with an Austrian M95 sling on it when I purchased it from an auction house in Minnesota this past summer for about $300. The stock has the same Austrian style sling swivels installed and is marked with a "W" on the top of the butt stock. The rifle itself is also marked with a strange "T" on the receiver that doesn't seem to be Russian in origin, though I haven't seen a confirmation that it is Austrian either.

In any case, enjoy the photos!

Damn those are sweet. Love to find something like that, but the pickings have been slim to none lately.

The early features on the 1896 are great. I have a bunch of M91s but never found one with a wooden crossbolt.

Those are stunning rifles! The early ones really are the interesting rifles.
