Mauser porn buffet

Post by SA1911a1 »

Kinda like Jimmy Buffet, huh?

I am a bottom feeder collector, and of limited means, and a collector of opportunity. Over the years, while searching for Mosins, I ran into deals on some old rusty Mausers. I never went out looking for them, but I ended up with a fair sampling of Mauser types. Mr. Ball would barely sneeze at any of these, and the guys at Gunboards would use most for parts guns, but I have gotten a lot of pleasure out of them. I start out with two that aren't Mausers at all (GEW 98s) but they are Mauser wannabes.

My favorites are the Swede '96 (a matching gorgeous rifle) The WZ-29-E (SCW rifle) The Argentine 1891, and the Yugo M-1924s. I have had really poor luck with the 7MM Mausers, as I have yet to buy one that won't keyhole rounds. Those old guns can still look good and be shot to death.

If anyone would like any detail photos, let me know.

When did a GEW 98 become a Mauser wannabe?

The US national armory at Springfield Massachusetts decided in 1902 that the GEW98 wasn't a Mauser and therefore could be copied and passed off as the armory's own design in 1903. The Mauser company had a very negative view of this and had their lawyers take issue with Springfield armory's performance . The Armory lost, had to pay royalties for the design, and from then on nobody has ever suggested the GEW98 wasn't a Mauser. Great collection Steve, looks like my Mauser hoard...I mean collection.

Thank you. I am proud of them. Believe it or not, the most costly to me was the Yugo 24/47 at $300.00, the one I am the least attached to. It goes to show, you can build a nice selection of old obsolete, rusty guns, on a tight budget. Of course, if the mileage was factored in, they would average probably a grand apiece. :)

Yea, that "our rifle" thing came back to bite the goverment in the butt until bailed out by WWI. There are those who swear that the Americans made the best Mauser ever produced. I bet the Germans grind their teeth over that.

You are right Sheepdog, thanks for the correction. I typed it wrong, I typed 98 when I meant 88. My "wannabes" are the two GEW 88s on the left. Even if they aren't Mausers, or Mosins, I like them and on occasion I have to take them to the range for a light shoot.

We did make the best Mauser even produced  actually many fine Mauser's were made outside of Germany. Belgium, Turkey, Sweden, just to name a few.

IIRC, the Gew 88 is an indirect Mauser. Imperial Germany kept the Mauser action, which they bought the rights to, and just modified it to what they wanted. It sucks that they didn’t consult Mauser but, legally they didn’t have to. The US otoh.... yeah nice job guys. Although that nice job is not entirely sarcastic. I’m more partial to the M1917 though. Mainly because they saw more action in WW1 than the ‘03’s proportionally.

Nice looking collection fellow bottom feeder  My collection is for enjoying and shooting. Not for collecting dust in a museum. I do have a few nice ones stashed away though :)

I own a Swedish Mauser, it's nice, but not my 1913 Rock Island Arsenal US M1903 nice. Everyone is used to seeing '03's as they are after ten government overhauls, they had a different look when first issued. Bluing, tiger striped dark walnut stock, excellent fit. My 1913 is a WW1 bringhome never overhauled, nothing changed since 1913. I was fortunate to be able to acquire it from the man himself who brought it home back many years ago. Work of art even after fighting a war.

Black and Decker? What is this, the 1990's? I haven't had that brand since the early 12 volt ni-cad battery models came out. These days it's Milwaukee. Haven't had a Tasco scope in at least that long also, nowadays I only drill and tap when doing amateur lobotomy's on people who piss me off

They are good also but I was looking for battery compatibility with the other Milwaukee cordless tools I have.

Bet my Swedes are easier on the shoulder. Truthfully I've never seen an 03 sniper variant that will out shoot my m/41B.

Boy I'd really like to have a nice 03 though.

I would like to have a nice '03 and a nice Garand, just not enough to pay for either of them. My brother collects both, and has some really 'spensive ones. and I keep waiting for him to feel sorry for me and sell me one of his culls for what he has in it. The only problem is, my brother is the only person I know that is more of a tightwad than me.
