S&W Model 638 Airweight

Post by tjtM38 »

I acquired this little jewel over the weekend. I think it will make a great carry gun.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Nice little revolvers. They are a little snappy so best put 50 or 100 rounds through it to get the feel of it.

Great looking model 638. Congrats. Good to put in your pocket. Don't have any issue with the hammer getting caught.
Here is my model 642. I just stick it in my pocket and go on my way.

  I like the 642. My LGS had both in stock. There is just something I like about the "humpback" shrouded hammer on the 638. I think it looks old school and with my fairly small hands, I can cock and fire single action with ease, although routine practice will be mostly double action. I have already put 35 rounds of PMC ball through the little gun, and I think I am going to settle on PMC 130 grain ball for the little bit of range practice I will do with the little revolver. The defensive load will probably be Remington 125 Grain Hollow Point +P, but I am still looking at some other loads in that category.

This is probably the most famous (or infamous) use of a S&W Bodyguard during the 1968 Tet Offensive in Saigon.

Problem is that photo shows a North Vietnamese Officer n civilian clothes being summarily executed as a spy. Everyone sees a poor civilian being shot like a dog.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

As to the pistol, nice choice although I prefer the steel versions over the Airweights as there is less recoil and you get used to the extra carry weight rather quickly.

I put a hole in our kitchen floor with one in 1976 (a blued Bodygurd) I vowed to learn how different gun actions worked so that wouldn't happen again.

Nice find, tjtM38! Good carry gun!
