New to me 91/30

Post by neorebel »

I just picked up a nice 91/30 from my LGS. Nice bore, not counter bored, and just a nice all around imported 91/30.

I thought I would share some photographs of her.

Congrats, it is a nice 91/30 with some interesting little points. Pre war escutcheon on the butt and war time half escutcheon in the forestock, also like the Balkan type repair on the left side of forestock. Nice khaki colored sling and one black dog collar. I'm diggin it. :vcool: :vcool: :vcool:

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I forgot to mention the bore is VERY nice as well.

I put a round in the end of the barrel, it was very tight and went in about half way..not bad...not counter bored.

I will probably shoot her tomorrow.

You see I had the ammo but I needed the rifle to go with it....at least that's what I told my wife.....I don't thing she was fooled.

Done that many times, have ammo, no gun, find gun, shoot ammo, have gun, no ammo.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Better machining than most of the wartime examples. I have yet to add a wartime produced Mosin to my
small but growing collection. All I have stumbled up on lately is Finns ( 2 M39s and 34 Izhevsk 91/30) but
that's not a bad thing at all. Finns eluded me for 3 years but have been showing up, 3 since early March.
The addiction is getting expensive. You have a nice rifle, shoot it clean it and enjoy it.

The machining on this rifle tells it all as to what was happening in the world at this time. "Get it out the door, Ivan is waiting."

Yep the Nazi's made the big mistake of attacking the Russians. Dumb.

The rough machining is beautiful to me!

By-the-way. I do put a thin piece of cork under the end of the receiver at the curve (It always seems to be rough there and over cut.) and a piece under the very end of the barrel for some upward pressure and to take out some of the vibration.

I have had great results even 1 1/4" groups at 100 yards.... hard to believe but true and the cork can always be removed when you sell it if you want to or at least let the buyer know for sure.

Here's a good sight on corking and I only put it in here because it doesn't change the rifle one iota.

Yep pretty consistent 5 round groups at 50 yards with Wolf 147 grain ammo.

Two 5 shot groups were a tad over 1" not too bad.

The group in the upper left is Wolf hunting ammo 203 Grain.

All were shot at the same Point Of Aim as marked.

It's interesting that the Wolf 203 grain shot high and to the right.

It was pretty windy as well with about a 14 wsw knot cross wind. The range is pretty much n/s.

That rifle helped win the Great Patriotic War. Along with a lot of guts. Mother Russia has always resisted the invader. Stopped the Hitlerites at the gates. If you can read thank a teacher, if you can read in english thank a veteran.

I agree with neorebel, roughly machined wartime receivers are a thing of beauty. You got a nice 42

“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
