What's the dumbest thing you've ever done with a Mosin

Post by hokie1999 »

I went to the range Saturday with 2 boxes of Tula. I fired one shot and the shell didn't eject. I'd worked on the ejector pin recently so I said "must have screwed it up." Left range, went home and realized: wrong ammo. .308. Boxes look the same.

You know, that could have gone bad, real bad.

Somebody was looking over me Saturday!

I didn't do anything like that yet but I do remember buying the first one I liked and that turned out to be the most expensive mistake I have ever made. Well maybe just a little bit bad not a lot! Bill

.308 shouldn't even be able to fire in a mosin, and if it somehow did the escaping gas around the case into the action should be significant I'd think.

Lapses like that can end a Mosin addiction. At one time I had three nearly identical P-63s. 9x18, .380 and .32acp. I stayed so concerned about mixing something up I got rid of two of them.

I haven't done anything stupid with a Mosin, but I put a 303 British round in a 30-06 when I was a kid. It failed to fire and has made me double check that I'm using the correct round every time now.

Good lesson learned that you really really really need to pay attention. It's easy to become complacent and that's when stuff like this or way worse happens. One thing I'd be checking is to see if the projectile actually cleared the bore. Since the chamber couldn't seal properly the bullet might not have had the velocity to make it all the way out of the barrel.

I think my biggest mistake that I made with a Mosin was picking up a 91/59 at a gun show and then setting it back down. It was gone later when I went back to get it.

Dumbest things? Sold some. I have a light fixture that has the glass covering that look like they go on an oil lamp. Broke one while walking through the house at shoulder arms.

dumbest thing i did. shooting at a 12" log and thinking it would stop the surplus ammo. nope, it went through, then through a fence post and split a rock and was deflected somwhere. all at 50 yards.

Failed to adequately tighten the bands on an M91, which resulted in the handguard flying off at the first shot, and then "describing a graceful arc" to land in front of the firing line. Thank God the handguard wasn't damaged.
