Armslist Surprise- NRA M1 Carbine..

Post by ffeng31 »

While browsing Armslist the other night, I noticed an ad for a "General Motors" carbine. It stated that the price was now reduced and that it had been purchased in the 70's by his dad through the NRA. What gave me caution , and likely why it had been ignored by others, is that the seller stated the stock had been refinished . I know , buy the gun not the story, right? I took a chance and gave the seller a call. I set up an appointment to see it, and it is a great understatement to say that I am glad I did. First glance showed a nice 6 digit inland that looked to be fresh from refurb , cartouches were still present on the stock and there were still traces of cosmoline all over the metal. But , just as the ad stated, the owner had applied a thin layer of some kind of clear coat... At this point I was a bit bummed but was still willing to see if we could work something out as I've run into this before and am fairly skilled at carefully removing this type of finish. Then, out of the blue, the seller says to me " I dont know if you care much about stuff like this, but I have the original papers from when my dad bought this rifle " . At this point I just about fell over.. He had it all, Everything from a copy of the original ad from the NRA to the receipt for purchase , to the shipping documents... That sealed the deal, money changed hands and I left with a smile from ear to ear.. I got her home, worked my magic to remove the very thin clear coat , and am left with a near pristine example of an NRA sold carbine... I will let the pics tell the rest..Oh and he was a bit off on the date. It was ordered in July of 1966 , and delivered in December. A full year before I was born.

Thank you ! Thankfully the owner didnt sand the stock at all and the clear coat caused no harm. My part was simple, I cleaned off the clear coat and gave it a good wipedown with some lemon oil.

I have one my Dad bought from the NRA back in 1968, the NRA offered these for sale twice, in 1966 and again in 1968. Mine to was $20.00 shipped from Anniston Army Arsenal ( now CMP South) via REA. Got all the paperwork and info, makes a cool carbine even neater when you can produce the original paperwork

I gave my Dad his asking price for it, $300.00 back about 12 years ago and felt that was a bargain back then.

One of the best finds I have seen in a long, long, time, why it pays to check those classifieds from time to time :Drool1: :Drool1: :Drool1:  .
