Stock Repairs - The Best, Worst, Most Numerous, Beautiful

Post by one finger john »

As the title implies. There have to be stocks that make you say " This is a jig saw puzzle!" :big shock: From the best to the worst to a thing of absolute beauty and craftsmanship (or skill & engineering).

17,000,000 made. Lots & lots refurbed. Some run over by tanks. Some blowded dup by something. Maybe thrown from an airplane. How many trees gave their lives to be a stock?

AND REMEMBER :worthless:

Maybe the admins will throw in a prize for each category (?)

Keep those cards & letters comin' in.

Most here are familiar with the finn spliced stocks, but the Russian arsenal craftsmen also turned out a few of their own. I have no examples to show but my favorites are the balkan butterfly/bandaid repairs like the one Pip posted.

I bought a Izhevsk refurb that was advertised as being totally sealed in grease to the point that the bore condition was unknown. I took a chance but had no other bidder competition, and after cleaning it up found a pretty cool rifle with a good bore and no import mark, and a cool albeit delicate stock repair. The grease has weakened the glue to the point where the repair fell out. I glued it back in with Gorilla Glue. The problem with Gorilla Glue is that it is water moisture activated, and as it sets up it swells up in a white foam, and is visible in my repair. I decided to leave it since it was now strong and didn't want to break the little pieces.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Interesting. Some reminded me of a pool que, especially the rounded tangs or the sharp pointed joiners. JYD's picture of the left side repair with three joints (?) showed a utilitarian type of repair that said "repair it if you can, we need every stock we can find". Nice picture also. Red Spoon's showed amazing workmanship. Bunkysdad example - crusty.

All interesting so far. Look at the repair of the stock as an art. Anybody care to try a repair like these today?

Pictures of how stocks were made (shaped, machined, stained, etc.) would be nice.

Really, if you think about it, the stock is the first thing one sees when looking at any rifle.

i know we have had natural color and grain patterns exhibits, but you can refresh our memories and repost favorites (or oddities).

Thanks, John

I love this rifle, 1939 Izhevsk, all matching, with prewar stock.

Finger jointed, pieced in, and spliced. It's even got mis-matched escrutchions, screw in on the front, press in on the rear.

Grain patterns are absolutely beautiful. What finish is on there?

I did nothing to the finish as I just purchased it last week, disassembled it and wiped it down with lemon oil this morning. Dealer told me it came from his distributor as is. The more experienced members opinions or comments are most welcome.
