Today's purchase

Post by zedteamk2 »

Today i officially upgraded to a collection of Mosin's ( two's a collection right? )
I had a gift card from Cabellas and decided to use it.
It's a 1942.
The stock has a different finish that my other Mosin, this one has a textured feel, not slick like a varnish. It has a lot of cosmoline in it, so I don't think it has been altered (at least not recently)
All numbers match except for the trigger guard, that one is force matched.
What are your thoughts/ Opinions?
More/ better pics when i clean it up.

Excellent, wartime round receiver Tula, Soviet post WW2 refurb, lighter stock than some others, all the serial numbers except the barrel number are force matched, such is the nature of how the refurbs were refurbished. The line out is just Soviet corner cutting laziness, they didn't bother on some rifles to grind off the old number, no explanation exists as to why. Good addition. :)

Nice looking 1942 Tula! I have the same make and year myself. I know that you will enjoy owning and shooting it. Be sure to check the head spacing and the protrusion of the firing pin from the bolt head before you shoot it - just to be safe! :D

Very nice. These lighter stocks seem to turn up at Cabela's from time to time.

So, the rougher feeling finish to the wood is not a problem? It just has a totally different feel to it than my other Tula. ( a 1938 I think)

Can't answer about the finish. Send them both to me and later this spring I will take them both to KY and Millman And I will evaluate them.

I got my first and only mosin ( so far) from cabelas. An all matching 1943 Izhevsk. It's the most common one available but it's a start for me.

Zed, the rougher wood on some is just the nature of the beast with refurbs. I guess they sanded some smooth before the shellac went on. With many workers would be many different ideas of quality. Quality control? Maybe in a commercial American firearm program.

Very nice! I picked up a '40 Tula because of the lighter stock like the one you have, really stands out in the collection compared to the other dark ones!

This looked a bit odd to me. It's a notch cut out of the stock but i cant see why. I dont think my other mosin has this. Also, there are two notches on the under side- they look like they are to make room for the hinge of the magazine.

Nice rifles.....love the wartime ones.......you cAN STILL "FEEL" THE URGENCY in their build.....wartime Russia................crank 'em out ...and they did, and the rifle is still a damn good rifle today, 70 freekin years later. They did a lot right.
