Finn 91/30, do you think Bubba touched the stock?
Finn 91/30, do you think Bubba touched the stock?
SA stamped 1942 Izhevsk 91/30. I'm wondering if Bubba did some light work on this one. I don't think it was sanded or even stripped or the person doing the stripping did a really good job. I say this because the stock still retains all the dark areas caused by hand oils, notice how dark the wrist is.
My concern is the red color, could it have been dyed and notice the shine, could a top coat have been put on?

I don't know enough to be able to say, but the stock is awfully glorious . Either way it's a beautiful rifle

Looks like it might be a modern poly coat to me but it is a great lookin job! What does it smell like? Polyurethane has a flat/sour smell that can hang around a long time.

Few more fotos. One from the top of it and of the front area. Could be a Russian stock but cant tell with out the front. Don't think it is poly but maybe tung oil but cant tell from the pics given.

The color looks more like what I would expect on a Balkan used M91, could be somebody replaced a sported Finn stock with a Balkan one. The sling hangers are easy enough to find, I have a new set someplace that Mike O sent me a few years ago.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

If it was shellac or arsenal applied I would think there might be a few places it got on the metal. I don't see that on yours. Looks a little too "clean". Look for brush strokes on the wood, especially on the butt stock where they usually made a turn. That's a dead give away that it's a Russian shellac. Being a Finned rifle though I doubt you will find that.
