Thanks! I thought that would have been a given from my photo. I assume there isn't another way to tell when they were made.Izhevsk762 wrote:I forgot to mention, my crate also had the handles held on with spent cases, I thought that was cool. They should also have a year marked on the rim of the bullet too.

I double checked the rim and confirmed mine are from 1947.
Re: Russian 40s Surplus 7.62x54R on Strippers $125.00/600+$2
Actually the 47 you see on that particular can is the date the powder was made. "BT" indicates type of powder, 48 is the lot number and the characters to the right of the numbers indicate the powder factory.JTheBigJay wrote:i havn't figured out how to read these cans yet. The date the cartridge case was made often is a year later than that date. The standard marking scheme would also show the cartridge mfg date but for some reason it is not on the can pictured here. It also is not on the can I recently got from AIM.
If you look at the wood crates on the first page of this thread you can see the cartridge build date: "X - 47" The X is a Roman numeral that indicates the month and 47 is the year.

Hello,
I found these forums and this post after trying to find out about the smell from the sealed cans of ammo. I've bought two crates of these, 4 cans worth and they've all smelled strange.
I was wondering if anyone knows if these cans were vacuum sealed, or maybe filled with some form of gas before being sealed. Reason I ask is because all 4 cans I have the lid has a small spot on the middle, which goes through the lid to the underside, I looks like a hole was soldered shut on each of them. Maybe I'm thinking too much and it was just part of how they packed them, let the pressure out while sealing up the rest of it, then just plug the hole last? Not paranoid, just curious.
you can see what I'm talking about in other pics posted, and here are mine:
anyhow, weird smell, still shoots.

Welcome to the forum. I don't know how much of this thread you read but this was brought up and few pages back. viewtopic.php?f=30&t=5182&start=40 Starting with the post by Websterz near the bottom after his were delivered and he comment about the smell. If you haven't read that I would. It may not completely answer your question because there real isn't one that we know of for sure but it's got some good suggestions and well, is funny. As for the holes in the tins, you may be right but who knows. It's possible.sykl0ps wrote:Hello,

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, I read that before hand, then I looked over at the cans I had and noticed they all had that hole welded up. Thought that it might add to this already interesting discussion. I don't know why I care about how a box was packed over 60 years ago, but I really want to know why that hole was there.WeldonHunter wrote: Welcome to the forum. Welcome to the forum, you are correct that the hole is there to allow gasses generated by the soldering of the can to escape. The Czechs did something similar, in fact anyone sealing a tin box like this would have to leave a vent hold, it's just basics, and you seal up the hole last when the heat has dissipated. It would also be a good way to add some sort of inert gas to the inside of the can, but I see no evidence the Soviets added any kind of oxygen displacer like argon to the cans.

Ran 20 strippers of this through the 'ol girl yesterday, performed admirably! ~90% were hitting paper at 150yds with open sights.

A bunch of these are showing up on ebay now and the price is dropping. A heck of a lot of folks bought the ammo in this thread and it came with 120 clips per case. The way these are being advertsed is "original Russian" or "Izhevsk marked."7.62 wrote:can any member help me get some good russian stripper clips all we can get here is ebay crap thanks for your help mates

I just wanted to let everyone know I had no problems whatsoever with split casings on my batch that was made in 1947. I only had one dud out of the 60 or so that I fired. Great stuff!
