Pre-1942 PU Snipers?

Post by EddieD25 »

Hey everyone. I have a question. I've seen a couple of PU snipers now that are dated 1937 and 1938. From what reading I have done the PU sniper version wasn't made until 1942. My question is are these real or are they fakes people are putting out as PU's?

Fakes. There were a few companies (like Century) that decided to mash together rifles & scopes that they had on hand and sell them as PU snipers.

A pre-42 PU would likely have had a different scope mount configuration, and that would be apparent on the receiver. However, it is very unlikely that a rifle would be reused in that manner. More likely it would show up as an Ex-sniper.

PU snip[er rifle mounts were not made pre 1942. The PU sniper mount was installed on new rifles starting in 1942.

Sniper rifles pre 1942 are not PU snipers. They are PE and PEM sniper rifles and would be mounted on rifles pre 1942. So there is no "pre-42 PU" sniper rifles.

(I'm doing this from memory, so it may be a little off here)

PE/PEM snipers 1932 to 1940, and 1942 (roughly)

SVT snipers 1942. Discontinued and they went back to the PEM and used the scope to develop the PU snipers.

PU snipers 1942 to 1964 (present really)

The Finns used the mount over the barrel shank to develop their snipers m39SOV , but they are pretty rare.

My mistake was in saying Pre-42 PU, instead of pre-42 sniper. I know that during that era the PE and PEM snipers were being made. Not only were they different mounting configurations they were different scopes with differint optics and bodies. Wish I could get one of them.
