First deer sighting from the stand
This doe and her fawn just now walked by me about 30 yards in front of my stand. Not really expecting to see a buck this morning, but seeing these two for just a minute makes my time in the stand worth it.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Biggest problem I have with the deer...keeping them from taking a short cut across the front yard...

Beautiful animals. I went out to my stand again this evening with 20 minutes of daylight left after painting one of my windows. After a few minutes that doe and fawn came out again. They hung out for a while in the open munching on some foliage. I watched them till the sun went down. They're bedding down in the wood line behind my woodshed.

One was stuck to the door handle of the van yesterday morning when I came out at 5AM in the dark. I felt something moving under my palm, didn't squish it, did call it everything but it's name.

Re: First deer sighting from the stand
I'm out here again this morning. All week I couldn't get out till real late at about 8am because of coming off the night shift. Same case this morning. It's a comfortable 75 degrees with light showers; not quite heavy enough to penetrate the cedar canopy above me. I'm trying out my new grunt call too, but as late as I am getting out here I don't really expect to see anything. I couldn't resist the call of the woods anyway because "just in case I see something".

Re: First deer sighting from the stand
The deer showed up while it was still light out, about 15 minutes ago so I took some pics. Same four as last time plus another younger one with some round black growths.
I may get a mineral block next time I am at TSC.
The little one went up to the doe as if it was going to feed, the doe was having none of that.
What's the deal with the black spots?
They look my way when they hear the camera shutter and beep.
Do you think she sees me?
Someone needs to put on some weight, winter will soon be here.
A little playful.
Faun is a little timid, staying off the lawn.

Man those are some nice pics. That one looks diseased with I don't know what. You ought to put out more edibles for those gals, that other one looks like she's starving. I guess the others don't share much with her lol..

Re: First deer sighting from the stand
I don't feed the deer except to throw out certain food scraps into the woods, mainly stale bread or fruit/vegetables. I have no idea what eats it.
This area is packed with deer, its on a wooded ridge line where the deer are safe. I guess they are all competing for the same food. Except for the homes who have flowers and plants, there are only a few farmers fields where they only make hay.
I was googling the black growths and they are Cutaneous fibromas (warts). They are caused by a naturally occurring virus of the deer’s skin.
I cropped into this pic and it shows them all over the head.

The one is definitely too light to be in good health, and I'd pass on shooting her or the one with the spots.

There have been a couple of case of CWD in the state and one not too far from here so I am going to send the pic into the game commission and see what they say.mogunner wrote:The one is definitely too light to be in good health, and I'd pass on shooting her or the one with the spots.

Re: First deer sighting from the stand
A few years ago I was in the garage and a front was rolling in. Big long line of black clouds against a clear blue sky and had an eerie feel to it. I went in and got the wife to come have a look. We were standing in the double door of the garage when a doe came wandering out of the woods behind the house. She looked sickly and wasn't moving very fast. I ended up having enough time I could have retrieved my HD .45 from the kitchen and drop her, but I couldn't stop staring in awe. As she turned the corner and trotted down the edge of the field she grunted a few times and blew at us. Then I noticed her entire hind end was covered in poo. The whole encounter was about 3 minutes and she only covered about 40 yards of ground before she was gone again. Probably a good thing to let her pass because she was as scrawny as the one above and half covered in poo.

It looked like how a cow gets it. Starts at the tail and widened on the way down.
