SKS- Claymore/Frag Damage and Jungle Repairs
SKS- Claymore/Frag Damage and Jungle Repairs
When acquiring old military guns, we often use hear the phrase, "If it speaks to you..."
And though this 1967-era Jianshe Arsenal Chinese SKS has no Vietnam War capture papers, we can still hear some of its tales today - loud and clear.
This carbine and its soldier experienced at least one very bad day, as evidenced by the damage to the underside of the fore end. Whether it was hit with either a claymore mine or frag grenade explosion in that fateful moment, it's difficult to say for sure. But with no visible marks from the center of the gun to the rear, the SKS was perhaps shielded from more extensive damage by it former carrier.
Several frag scars are visible on the bayonet, with one projectile cutting a hole clean through the spike. None of the strikes would hamper operation of the gun, and it still retains all of its matching numbered parts.
Whichever the source of damage however, the explosion did take the gun out of service, at least for a short time. More impact points are detectable on the stock, all from the magazine well and forward. One projectile penetrated up through as far as the underside of the handguard, but left the gas tube undamaged.
These impact points were field repaired with a putty filler. For unknown reasons, the rear sling swivel was transferred to the top of the buttstock, and the bottom inletting was also filled with the putty. The whole stock was then refinished with a dark brown shellac.
And judging from heavy jungle patina, the improvised top mounted AK-style canvas sling, scars and scratches through the brown shellac, the carbine was returned to see some additional rigorous service, before finally being relieved by a US Armed Forces member.
This SKS speaks, and it tells some harrowing stories. Thanks for looking and listening.

Thank you for sharing a very cool piece. My guess on the sling is the attachment was changed so that the rifle could be slung to where it hangs in front of the soldier , in a more ready position.

I bet that left a mark
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

And that is why I love wood and steel Milsurps. They tell stories.

I'm guessing WP burned the hole through the bayonet.

Wow, tells quite the story don't it! I wonder did the operator get a chance to fill his drawers, maybe not. Beautiful specimen and great pics as usual.

Do the holes in the bayonet line up to holes in the stock - ie was the bayonet extended or stowed when the damage occurred?
Re: SKS- Claymore/Frag Damage and Jungle Repairs
Yes, the holes line up. So the bayonet was in the retracted position at the time of the incident.soylentblue wrote:Do the holes in the bayonet line up to holes in the stock - ie was the bayonet extended or stowed when the damage occurred?

I love it. Another very interesting Rifle Martin.
No doubt the carrier of that weapon was headed to a very bad place.

This rifle had much to tell but it needed your sharp eyes and special knowledge to hear it. I thank you for taking the time to show the rest of us.

Re: SKS- Claymore/Frag Damage and Jungle Repairs
I meant to comment on this interesting piece some time ago and must have forgot. I really like this. I can sure see why you added it to your fine collection. This is way above collecting shooter rifles to build a collection. This one is riddled with questions that can only be answered with a "most likely" or a "could have been" answer. I do know one thing, if the soldier that carried it had it slung across him when the shrapnel hit it then that is where he bought the farm. Heck even that thought is hypothetical, maybe the carbine took the brunt of it.
