If this M91 could talk.

Post by gurn »

Got this old war horse at a show recently and boy has it been there done that. In its young life it lived in Russia. Then moved to Germany, notice the stock stamps. Then to Austria-Hungary, notice the OEWG stamp and the renumbered rear sight. Apparently re-chambered for the M93 8x50mm Austrian round. Then made its way to Finland. Finally here. What a life. Question, anyone know if the marked out number 2132 was done when re-chambered or what?

Wow that's a neat one. I'd guess the Germans or Austrians did the number. More their type of font.

I have been reading where the Finns. would braze a sleave in the chamber bringing it back to 7.62x54r. I am looking in it and comparing it to a reg. Mosin and I cant see the difference with my eyes. I guess i should try and measure the chamber somehow. The bore is .311

I tried a spent 8x56r case and it went down pretty far. Then I tried the same case in several other reg. Mosins and it didn't go very far in. So for now I am assuming this one is still in 8x50r making it a fairly rare bird. I will try and get a 8x50r case soon and know for sure.

On a side note I cleaned some of the crud out of one of the numbers on the sight and see some gold in there.

So this is not 7.62x54R or are you not sure? It is a very attractive old milsurp that's for sure.

The chamber is definitely larger. This must be one the Finns. never got around to converting back. No chamber work done and they didnt line out the sight numbers. If my research so far is right this could be the only one known this way. That kind of boggles my mind. Here is some good info on it by JPS over on GB. starting in line 11 in particular. http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread. ... ussian-M91

This is the first time I have heard of the Austrians re-chambering captured Mosins. I guess I should break out the borescope and check out my 1942 Austrian capture M39 and check it out.

Bought a bunch of 8x50r Austrian ammo and a round chambers and extracts perfectly. I did a chamber cast of mine. Which proved it was in 8x50r. You can also see where it was reamed a bit before the rifling starts. Which would allow the .323 round to squeeze down to the .311 bore size. :big shock: Borescope videos and pics to come. So, it's the only one known with its story and chambering combination?
