Looking for an over-under

Post by Mike »

I've been shooting skeet for almost three years now, I've been saying for the last two that I really need an over-under instead of the pump I use. I keep starting to save my gun allowance but then get tempted by something else and spend it. Then last weekend I borrowed a field grade Stoeger and shot the best rounds I have ever shot, it is definitely time to go double barrel.

This time I WILL NOT yield to temptation.

Besides, Biden says I need one for home defense. :chuckles:

The Stoegers are decent for the price, but if I were to the point that I was looking to upgrade, I would search for a used Browning Citori.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Don't rule out a semi-auto. I have a Winchester Super X 3 (FN manufacture; assembled in Portugal). It is the best shotgun I have ever owned. With screw in chokes, you can use it for anything.

I have shot a Citori, I loved it, and it would go well with my BPS. If I can find a used one at the same price as a Stoeger Competition model I will by it, however, the Stoeger fit me perfectly so I am seriously considering one.

I have shot skeet with a Remington 1100, it is a nice shotgun, but I want the shorter, faster swinging over-under.

I had a Beretta 686 trap special back in the 90's. It was a sweet gun but I am not a trap shooter so I traded it for $1200 worth of milsurps and ammo, that was a lot of guns back in 1994.

Santa brought me a Citori White Lightning this year and I really like it. It is my first "good" O/U.

I have a friend who bought a Yildiz, which is Academy Sports in house brand of Turkish made over/under. I have shot it and looked at quite a few at the store and they seem to be quite nice. For the price I do think I would definitely try a Stoeger. The only Stoeger I am very familiar with is the coach gun side by side. When shooting over/under I have a Charles Daily which ws made by Miroku in Japan, and it is choked skeet-skeet and has probably killed more doves than clay pigeons. Before my dad died his favorite bird gun was a Remington 1100 lite 20, and it now resides in my safe. If you don't hit with it, then you are closing your eyes to shoot. If you have Academy stores near you, you should at least look at the Yildiz, you won't believe the beautiful Turkish Walnut stocks on these over/unders.

I would have done that trade as well.... :vcool:

There's a Winchester 101 on my local Armslist right now, tempting but higher than my budget.

Since Winchester closed it's doors, then reopened, I was shocked to see how expensive their entire product line is now. They claim that their model 70 bolt rifle is made to the pre-64 design. The 101 would be worth the cost if you could swing it but their are a lot of cheaper options

I personally would do some looking at used shotguns, I'd either look for a Browning Superposed or a Beretta, both will cost more but will also hold their value over time. Sometimes it's better to defer a purchase a little longer, save a little more money and get the shotgun you really wanted in the first place. Or look at doubles...but that's an addiction all by itself.

My choices would be:

1. Superposed-Always loved 'em, Shot a few.
2. Remington 3200- Because I could never afford a Kreighoff 3200.
3. Citori- Kinda "meh" to me, but I shoot them well.
4. Beretta 686- Love 'em, shot several, learned Sporting Clays with them.
5 Ruger Red Label- Good gun, the only one I shot was a rep's demo gun, stiff as a board.
6. Win. 101-had one once, but made a ton of money selling it.
and though not very classy, I always liked the Marlin Model 90.
