Is bulk 7.62x54 worth stocking up on?
Is bulk 7.62x54 worth stocking up on?
Basically what I'm looking for is a iron sight rifle that is just fun to put rounds through, a mosin nagamt seems to fit the bill nicely. However Ive seen how ammo prices tend to rise . And I've also seen how surpluses literally run out.
Is 7.62x54r worth buying a couple crates of solely for use in mosin nagant?

Absolutely. That's like asking a fat man if he recommends the chocolate cake!

I have to agree, buy as much as you can afford. Ammo prices almost never go back down. Not significantly anyway. Buying in bulk almost always saves you money. You just need to make sure you compare prices before you buy and do your homework. As for 7.62x54R running out. Not any time soon. Funny you should mention this. I talked to a friend on mine yesterday that imports surplus ammo from the Ukraine. He just got back from a trip there to inspect the next lot he purchased and he told me we don't have to worry about 7.62x54R running out. He has about 10,000,000 rounds of 7.62x54R and 5.45x39 coming and will be on the market in about 4 to 6 weeks. He said that there's still a fair amount of 7.62x54R in the Ukraine as well as Belarus and Bulgaria. The 5.45x39 is what guys with AK74s should be concerned about. He said that this last shipment that's on the market right now came from Belarus through the Ukraine because of the embargo which drives the price up. For that ammo this will be the norm and he said in about the next 5 years the cost will be to close to commercial 5.45x39 to be worth it. One thing that's driving the price up on this ammo is the middle east conflicts, where most of it's going. That and having to play musical country to get around embargo's. Everyone wants a cut and to have to ship it from one country to another so it can be exported is costly. Then there's the bribes that must be paid.

Yes, it is worth hoarding.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I'm a broke college student so the budget is about 400-700 if I pushed it badly. I was looking at the 600$ ak74s however I would only be able to buy one can of ammo for it at best. Which would last about 2 range trips with a 30 round mag. The fact it may soon go up makes me think buying a rifle in that caliber is probably not the best choice of my limited budget. I already have an Norinco semi auto rpk variant and 7.62x39 makes the gun very costly to shoot. I could buy some more 7.62x39 for it as 400$ would get me a lot of bullets but i kinda like the idea of a bolt slowing me down and with the price of 7.62x39 vs 7.62x54r these days it easily justifies buying a mosin

Get what you can afford now as the prices are not gonna get better. After you grad college and if there are still jobs then you can get something else you like

Do you also have a 22 rifle? They can be mixed in with big bore shooting to make a range trip last longer and have lots of fun on a budget.

I have an old 10/22 that I am in the process of restoring. Sad thing is 22 is almost going for as much as the Russian bulk o.o

Baker you are so right. It takes a act of Congress to find a bulk pack of 500 or 525 or whatever. You can get lucky sometimes at Walmart or Academy but you have to fight off the wolves and vampires just to get some.

I would say buy up what you can and do it sooner rather than later. There are a lot of reasons other than price you need to be concerned about. I truly feel that at some point, if worst comes to worst, they will make good bartar. I also feel that "they" won't come after the Mosins until the AK's and AR's are removed from the general population. But, in reality, this ammo won't be around for ever. Get it while you can at good prices. Some even offer free shipping.

Re: Is bulk 7.62x54 worth stocking up on?
Ok I know we have had this conversation before, but if you have to choose between ammo and a rifle what do you choose?? I have been choosing the rifle but I think I should grab a few crates while they are available.
Re: Is bulk 7.62x54 worth stocking up on?
Not only is 7.62x54R surplus dirt cheap at basically $90-100/440, the commercial ammo's are cheaper than a more conventional round like .308 or 30-06.. I know locally I can't touch cheap Remington 30-06 for less than $21/20, but I can pick up PPU 7.62x54R for $19/20 and PPU is actually good quality
Re: Is bulk 7.62x54 worth stocking up on?
My LGS has Seller&Beloit for..........get this.....$34.99 per 20 round box! Hes also asking mid $20's for PPU (which IS good ammo). If I don't shoot reloads, I will shoot milSup for as long as I shoot. Frankly I have found most of the stuff we get is fairly accurate from a good rifle. I do get the occasional flyer, and groups don't EVER go under 1MOA at 100 but I have seen three shots touching several times and that was MilSup 147 grn ammo. Its damn good IMHO.........oh, and STOCK UP!

Looks like I'll be buying a couple crates then. I just don't want to be smacked with ammo prices
