How not to reassemble a 91/30
I had a few minutes so I swung into a local shop. A new mosin owner had his refurb 91/30 on the counter asking advice. He had damaged it in a way I had never heard of.
1943 Izhevsk in a post war stock, stamped barrel band spring on the front, milled on the rear. The bands were really tight to get off for cleaning he said, he thought if he removed the band springs they would go back on easier. That logic escapes me, how would you push the rear band back far enough the put the spring on after the band? Anyways, the front spring stood up above the wood, he rotated it to get it loose and it came right out. The milled one was down in its slot apparently, it wouldnt rotate. He placed something against the top edge and hit it with a mallet to spin it counter clockwise. The stock had a chunk break out from the spring's slot clear down to the cleaning rod channel. New one on me, and he hadnt even fired it yet.
I told him to glue and clamp it, if that didn't work to call Libertytree for a stock. Maybe I should have told him he probably shouldn't be allowed to have a rifle. I mean, if a peasant conscript didnt have an issue like that....

Re: How not to reassemble a 91/30
good lord. The 28/30 I got yesterday that band was also TIGHT to get off
I find a lil gun grease on the wood once the band moves a lil bit forward then
it slips right off.
Poor gun

I don't understand why he did that, but obviously he thought it would work. No accounting for some people's children.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

So he took a mallet to it huh? He deserves what he has. A busted up shame.

I wonder how he would feel if I took the mallet and punch and did some work on his teeth with them.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
