1925 Izhevsk Dragoon with early stock features
1925 Izhevsk Dragoon with early stock features
I've pulled another one out of the safe for consideration for the showcase. I hope you find it interesting.
This Dragoon has quite a varied history. The stock started on a M91 in 1891, 1892, or the first half of 1893 (evidence is the finger rest repair.) It did not have a crossbolt at that time but a wooden one was added later, likely after the introduction of the 1908 spitzer cartridge. A year or so later, the wooden crossbolt was drilled and a steel crossbolt installed. During WWI, it was captured by the Germans (see the German Deutsches Reich property mark). Probably between the wars it was sold to Finland where it was mated with a separate rifle, a bought or captured 1925 Izhevsk Dragoon. This rifle has a very faint boxed SA mark. The Finns spliced a new forend using the typical Finn splice. At some time a leather sling was added that included the boxed SA mark.
Here is a photo that shows rear sight markings, arsenal markings, and Finn matched bolt. The KaB sight mark is specific for the Dragoon rifle.
The side of the barrel shank shows the lightly struck boxed SA.
The other side shows the Finn 41 stamp.
The Deutsches Reich property mark on the right butt stock.
Other right side details:
The second photo of the left side shows the wooden crossbolt drilled through with a steel one.
This shows the Dragoon solid barrel bands.
Here is the finger rest repair - slightly cropped on the right.
The Finn splice is so well-matched, it is hard to see.
There are no other markings on the butt plate.
The bolt has nice Sestroryetsk markings.
Finn leather sling markings.

A beauty and of course it belongs.

Very nice, Neal. I definitely think this should go into the showcase.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I love the ones that escaped the dip.

Showcase material for sure. That rifle was there watching when other rifles were just getting their first shots fired.
