Russian Spliced Stocks / showcase submission

Post by Miller Tyme »

While everyone has heard, seen, or owned a Finnish spliced stock, very few have ever seen or owned a Russian spliced stock. These are 2 examples of Russian spliced stocks on a 37 Tula 91/30 single splice and a 32 Izhevsk 91/30 double splice stocks.

Image

The 37 Tula is your typical forced matched 91/30 refurb with a nose repair and a early style splice stock with both front and rear screwed sling eschons.

The 32 Izhevsk is also a typical forced matched 91/30 with a nose repair too, but it is in a late war stock with a war time splice front end and a heal splice on the butt of the rifle.

The craftsmanship of the splices says a lot for the wood workers who put so much effort into saving what most countries would have scrapped.

Very cool MT. I've got two of them. One is a pre war rear end spliced to a mid war front. And the other is a pre war rear end spliced to a post war front.

Very nice! These are sometimes called 'pool cue' splices due the the obvious zig-zag pattern's resemblance to a billiards pool cue stick. I only ever ran into one in the wild, after I got it everyone I showed it too wanted it, and eventually I got a ridiculous (for back then) offer for it.

The one with the heel splice may be a rare bird. I don't ever recall seeing a solid hardwood toe on a laminate stock, if that is a lammy, just the other way around. In fact I think such an animal is on Ted's "want" list. I had it's more common cousin. A laninate toe on a hardwood stock.

Great examples Miller!

It's also another commentary on the Soviet system. They didn't do this sort of work because they liked spending the time or they enjoyed fine wood craftsmanship. They were broke and operating on a shoestring most of the time, lots of money to make the weapons, but endless economizing when it came to maintaining them. Wood is expensive, but the labor was dirt cheap. In a US arsenal a slightly damaged stock would be tossed and a brand new one installed without consideration, but then our system worked, theirs only fired on two or three cylinders most of the time.

It looks like there is a D stamp on the receiver of the first rifle?

Cool repairs.

Also, I was thinking; I know we have a showcase for special Mosins that have attributes that are not common. What about something setup just like the showcase, but for representing specific items. Examples:

JYD recently made those nice posts of a collection of stampings in wood and metal and of Finn origin. They should be saved somewhere other than buried in our pages that may be hard to search for.

Threads could be:
stock repairs
stock markings
metal markings
etc.

I know we have the info pages, but there are more markings etc. that have shown up since that page was updated...

Just having a random thought, might be a bad idea as being redundant, both maybe worth refining in discussion?

In conclusion, I love those stock repairs! The zigzag I've seen pictures of, but I like the shapes on the bottom!

I had one in my hands last year for $125.00 and let it go because I was concentrating on M39's at the time......... :redfaced: . I have NOT :devil2: forgiven myself for that. That rifle was not this nice but it was the only 'saw-tooth' I had seen.......stupid on my part. Your rifle is a beauty for sure. Congratulations.

That is the refurb mark that is the bi-sected circle, it is just the angle of the pic that makes it look like a D stamp.

Ah OK. I figured it was something else, as I know you know what a D stamp is.
