Re: Range time - FINALLY!
Relief.........I found a really good YouTube video on Okie gauges. It so happens the gent who shot it showed how to use the gauges on a SMLE. I was "reading" the results wrong. The bolt does not "close" on a NoGo gauge. The resistance I feel when I close my bolt mirrors what he s...

Re: Range time - FINALLY!
I did some research on the SMLE bolt. I took it out and the bolt head had one more turn left. I turned it in, replaced it, and cycled a case that I pulled the bullet from. It chambers smoothly now and locks. However, it will close on a field and no go gauges. The instructions say to close with finge...

Range time - FINALLY!
My first outdoor range time in a year! I wanted to burn some 7.62X54R since the pile of it in the closet is collecting dust. I also needed to shoot some PPU for brass to load for my M27s, M28, and M28/30. (Ever notice how a guy says he NEEDS to shoot some ammo? Like its lettuce and it'll go bad! :lo...

K98az build project
I've been accumulating parts for a K98az project. The receivers were smaller in diameter than the Gew 98 (or more modern 98K). Was that a one off design for the K98az, or are there other model with the same dimensions? If I can find an authentic receiver I'll go that route, but in the mean time, if ...

Re: Help I.D. a Mauser stock
I didn't notice it before (thought it was a peculiar dent) but the top picture shows a very small round imprint. There is some sort of symbol in there, but I can't make it out for sure......its sort of like VH or VB,

Help I.D. a Mauser stock
I picked this up recently thinking it was something else. At this point I'm not sure what it belongs to. I think it may be an export Mauser. Its walnut, has the same length of pull as my Gew 98 and M 98. It has no bolt takedown insert, and only has a regular sling swivel. Its basically the same leng...

Original broomhandle stocks
How do you ascertain the originality of a Mauser C96 holster stock? There are a bazillion cheap repros out there.
How much would you expect to spend for the "real deal??

Re: Gew 98 Question
If by any chance its all matching AND with a dust cover, I'd say you paid less than 25% As noted above....not much to go on right now. Tell us more!. Your right...those 98/05 bayonets are expensive.........the saw back ones are FRIGHTENING........and they look that way too!

Re: 1917 Mauser Oberberndorf Gew 98, opinions/suggestions
All things considered (especially the pics - really big for the detail, but it also makes the problem look HUGE!) is this a common situation? There's quite bit of it, but the worst areas are rear of the second step on the barrel, and the transition to the third step of the barrel (the thickest secti...

Buying/selling habits
I've been concentrating on WWI Stuff for a while, so my budget has temporarily shifted away from Finnish arms, but I still window shop. One thing I've noticed is that there will be a dearth of buying/selling other than the ubiquitous 91/30s, 44s etc. Once in a while a run of the mill 39 will go up. ...

1917 Mauser Oberberndorf Gew 98, opinions/suggestions
I finally got around to stripping and inspecting a 1917 Mauser Gew 98 that I got at an auction. Overall its in good shape. The barreled action matches the stock which all matches itself. The bolt is a replacement, but it matches completely. I would put the finish at 80% or better, dark blue. I found...

1915 Gewehr 98 (Imperial)
My WWI collection started with my 1916 DWM Luger, and then my 1916 K98az. I knew I needed standard issue battle rifles so I picked this up a few weeks ago. Its an Imperial Gew 98. 1915 Mauser Oberndorf. Its in decent shape. The bore is clean. The stock is sound but doesn't match the action, and it i...

Re: Strange Mosin variant?
Just noticed it window shopping.......looked odd.......Right now I'm into putting together a WWI collection. This came up in a GB search for "1917". I have to say its unique, but not for $599! $200-250.....I'd add it to my "oddity" section.

Thinking about shortening the barrel, perhaps it was bulged or otherwise screwed up?

Re: Just got my C96 project gun
I just discovered that the safety lever factors in to the hammer not dropping! NOW, before you say "DUH!" let me explain that when I put the safety lever in the fire mode - fully horizontal, I do what I believe everyone else would do - pull the lever down until it stops. In THAT position, ...

Re: Just got my C96 project gun
Now we get to the nitty gritty. The barrel sucks = relining to 7.63mm. The grips are an abortion = replacements on the way. The magazine spring is getting junked when I get the proper replacement. The other springs will be replaced to avoid other problems. The big questions are 1) Is the barrel exte...

Just got my C96 project gun
Its here. I've finally learned how to strip it and get it all together again. This is what I have - a War Time commercial 7.63mm. It started as one gun, but its a hybrid now. the frame serial number is 139978. The lock mechanism matches, as does the bolt. The floor plate is 362. The locking block is...

Looking for some info on Mauser C96s
I'm waiting on a pre-WW! C96 with a manufacturing date around 1913. What would be the correct grip for it? The pics I have now are not real clear. They appear to be around 20 lines. The right one is nearly smooth. Also, it seems I read, or heard on You Tube advice along the lines of making sure to h...
